Data Governance – When it’s all said and done, where do you want to be?

In a previous blog post I wrote about building the foundation and taking the first step to true comprehensive data governance by establishing a baseline to determine where your organization is today. The next step is to determine your future state and where you want to be with that comprehensive data governance.

To capture the vision and details of that desired future state, the best method is to design a series of templates where C-Level management, IT, and stakeholders can collaborate, review, utilize, and seek direction for Future State-To-Be Documents and review future state scenarios with live data sets of all pertinent data sets within an organization.

Those templates include:
1. Design Data Governance future state direction
a. Highlights the overall direction and strategy for the Data Governance Plan
2. Design and Review Data Governance Standards specific to your business on par with the best in class Industry Data standards
a. Allows organizations to adhere to industry best practices within the governance arena.
3. Functional areas of Data Governance:
a. Design Data Processes, Ownership flows, Tools & Structures for Anticipation, Data preparation, Data Migration, Hyper care and Life Cycle
4. Design & Review New Protocols
a. Includes strategies put in place to allow for true Data Governance.
b. Helps ensure proper utilization of Data Governance protocols.
c. Includes customized checklists to assist in proactively utilizing the new proper protocols.
5. Design and Review Metrics
a. Create Key Performance Indicator (KPI) chart
b. This enables stakeholders and business area teams the opportunity to review a set of quantifiable measures that can be utilized throughout business areas to gauge performance in terms of meeting their strategic and operational goals.
6. Design & Review the proposed Escalation & Resolution approach
a. This ensures a logical, repeatable process is in place when issues arise.
7. Design and review Data Governance Change Management processes and approach
a. Once again, this enables a logical, repeatable process to ensure smooth change management is in place when needed.
8. Research, Review Data Governance Tools & technologies
a. A comprehensive analysis of items that will assist with best practices for governance

Once finished, these template will allow your organization to move to the final step in the process of Data Governance – execution, transition, and ongoing training of these templates. Stay tuned for the next blog where I will be going into details of this final step.
